Police have launched a citywide crackdown across Kampala targeting street robberies, phone snatching, and drug abuse following increased public concern over rising insecurity.
The operations, conducted on March 23 by the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), were prompted by a surge in complaints from residents reporting criminal activity and social disorder in several urban communities.
KMP spokesperson Rachael Kawala said the coordinated enforcement effort is aimed at restoring law and order, particularly in areas affected by gangs involved in theft and drug-related offenses.
Police noted that the crackdown focuses on disrupting criminal networks behind phone snatching and robberies, as well as addressing drug abuse, which authorities say is fueling much of the violence.
“This is just the beginning of sustained operations,” Kawala said, indicating that security agencies will continue with intensified patrols and targeted arrests in the coming days.
Authorities have urged members of the public to work closely with police by sharing information that could help identify suspects and prevent further crime.
The ongoing operations underscore renewed efforts by law enforcement to curb urban crime and improve safety across Uganda’s capital.
