A wave of reflection and engagement swept through Naalya Senior Secondary School (S.S.) Bweyogerere Campus as Topowa Youth Mentoring Uganda officially launched its new youth initiative, TRAPPED, a theatre-based mentorship program targeting drug and substance abuse among students.

The premiere marked the start of a school tour designed to reach learners through a blend of live performance, storytelling, and guided reflection sessions. The program departs from traditional lectures, instead using drama to present real-life student situations involving peer pressure, curiosity, emotional struggle, and the gradual influence of substance use.

After the performance, facilitators engaged students in structured reflection and counselling conversations. Learners were encouraged to openly discuss the themes raised, relate them to personal experiences, and consider practical strategies for making safer and more informed life choices. Key discussions focused on resisting peer pressure, managing emotions, protecting personal goals, and understanding the long-term consequences of seemingly small decisions.

Teachers at the school described the approach as highly engaging and emotionally impactful, noting that students remained attentive throughout and actively participated in post-performance dialogue.

Organizers emphasized that the core message of TRAPPED is centered on awareness and consequence: that small choices can significantly shape a young person’s future. They said the use of theatre allows students to “see themselves in the story,” making the lessons more memorable and personal.

The launch was met with strong student response, with many expressing appreciation for the program’s realistic and non-judgmental approach to addressing sensitive issues.

Following the successful premiere, the program will continue its rollout to other schools across the region as part of a broader youth outreach campaign. The organization behind the initiative says it aims to strengthen resilience and decision-making skills among young people through creative and relatable engagement methods.
