Uganda Police have recovered an illegal firearm and arrested a 26-year-old suspect following a targeted security operation in Wakiso District, according to police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire.

In a statement, Owoyesigyire said officers attached to Nsangi and Kyengera police divisions acted on a tip-off from the public, leading to the arrest of Kimbugwe Vincent, also known as Kasumali.

“Police in Nsangi and Kyengera have successfully recovered an illegal firearm and apprehended a 26-year-old suspect following a targeted operation,” he said.

Authorities reported that a search conducted at the suspect’s residence in Massanda Cell, Kyengera Town Council, resulted in the recovery of an AK-47 rifle.

Police noted that the weapon appeared rusted and had an obscured serial number, raising further questions about its origin and prior use.

The firearm has since been submitted to a forensic laboratory for detailed examination.

“The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue,” Owoyesigyire added.

The police also praised local leaders and residents for providing timely information that led to the operation, emphasising the importance of community cooperation in combating crime.

Investigations are ongoing to establish how the suspect acquired the weapon and whether he is linked to any criminal networks.
