Over 200 Farmers Count Losses as Hailstorm Ravages Kisukuma Sub-county

The hailstorm also destroyed houses in the area and one Church belonging to the Seventh Day Adventists SDA.

The affected parishes include Haibale that has four villages and Bukona which also has four villages making a total of eight villages that have been hit by hailstorm.

The storm struck the villages of Kyakasaato, Bukona, Kyakayaya, Kikonkona, and Haibale in Kisukuma Sub County, Kigorobya County Hoima District on Monday.

Hectares of crops including tobacco, beans, bananas, sweet potatoes, simsim, cocoa, coffee, maize, gG-nuts and cassava were also heavily destroyed.

Over 200 Farmers have lost their crops due to the hailstorm that has hit the area. The farmers also lost their domestic animals and birds.

Asaba Tibita a farmer from Kiseku Village says his tobacco plantation has been hit by hailstorm and he had acquired a loan from the Bank of three million Uganda shillings which he invested on it and he is now stuck about how he will pay back this loan.   He also adds that his other crops including beans, cassava, cocoa, coffee, maize etc have also been seriously affected.

Grace Nyangoma a farmer from Haibale One LC1 explains that her house was spoiled by hailstorm and her four acres of bean and g-nut plantation were all destroyed but currently she has nothing to depend on.

Augustine Kalibagwa the LC1 Chairperson Haibale two village is also among the people that were affected by hailstorm whereby his house was damaged and the cocoa plantation was smashed.

Other local leaders in the area have called for help from the Office of the Prime Minister

Godfrey Bainomugisa the LC3 Chairperson Kisukuma Sub-County reveals that the total loss incurred is equivalent to four billion Uganda shillings.

He has called for immediate intervention from the Central government since most residents in the sub-county depend on farming as their main source of livelihood.
