Two men have been arrested in Tororo after allegedly impersonating State House Anti-Corruption Unit officials and demanding Shs10 million to help people arrested over corruption allegations.
The suspects reportedly claimed they were representatives of the unit and could arrange bond for people arrested during investigations arising from Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi’s anti-corruption campaign in Tororo.
Investigators said the complainant managed to raise Shs1 million, which was handed to the suspects as part of the requested payment.
The two were later arrested at the Procurement Office of Tororo Municipal Council. Investigators recovered the Shs1 million from them.
They were taken to Tororo Central Police Station, where they remain in custody as investigations continue.
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit has cautioned the public against individuals seeking money in its name, saying no one is authorised to solicit or demand payments from the public on behalf of the unit.
The arrests come amid ongoing anti-corruption operations in Tororo under Mr Balaam’s “Expose the Corrupt in Local Government” campaign, which has focused on alleged irregularities involving the Parish Development Model, payroll and public funds.
In a separate incident in June, four people were arrested in Tororo for allegedly posing as State House Anti-Corruption officials in a land dispute.
