The National Unity Platform (NUP) has condemned the alleged abduction of one of its supporters, Ninye Tabz, in Kamwokya, describing the incident as part of a growing pattern of intimidation against opposition members.
According to reports from party supporters and eyewitnesses, Ninye Tabz was reportedly seized on Wednesday by unidentified armed men travelling in an unmarked Toyota Hiace van, popularly known as a “drone.”
The incident quickly sparked outrage among opposition supporters, with several NUP leaders accusing security operatives of reviving controversial tactics associated with enforced disappearances and unlawful detentions.
Party officials said the continued targeting of opposition supporters creates fear among young activists and raises concerns about political freedoms ahead of Uganda’s next electoral cycle.
NUP leaders called on authorities to immediately disclose the whereabouts of Ninye Tabz and either release him or present him before the court in accordance with the law.
The so-called “drone” vans became a symbol of fear during the 2021 election period after numerous opposition supporters reported being picked up by armed men before later appearing in detention facilities or military courts.
Human rights campaigners have repeatedly urged the government to investigate allegations of illegal detentions and ensure accountability within security operations.
Security agencies have consistently denied involvement in unlawful abductions, insisting that all arrests are conducted legally and within established procedures.
By Wednesday night, there was still no official statement from authorities regarding the reported arrest or whereabouts of Ninye Tabz.
