A transformative moment in African football is taking shape as Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania gear up to host the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
Embracing the shared motto “Pamoja” – the Swahili term for Together – 19 national teams will compete in a tournament exclusively reserved for players active in their domestic leagues.
Preparations are in full swing, and national delegations are already arriving. Nigeria touched down in Zanzibar late last week, followed by Morocco, who landed in Nairobi two days ago. Niger also arrived in Uganda on Tuesday morning, adding to the mounting excitement.
The trio of East African hosts is not only rewriting the playbook on regional cooperation but also proving their ability to deliver a high-caliber football showcase. With modern stadiums, premium accommodations, and a spirit of cultural hospitality, the hosts are committed to making CHAN 2024 a grand celebration of African skill and solidarity.
In terms of group allocations:
- Kenya will host Group A, which features Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, and Zambia. Matches will take place at Kasarani Stadium and Nyayo Stadium, with the opener between Kenya and DR Congo set for August 3rd at Kasarani—the same venue that will stage the final and closing ceremony on August 30th, 2025.
- Tanzania will welcome Group B, comprising Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic, at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Tanzania will also host the opening match and official opening ceremony on August 2nd, where they will face Burkina Faso.
- Group C—including Uganda, Niger, Guinea, Algeria, and South Africa—will play at Nelson Mandela Stadium (Namboole) in Kampala. Uganda will also host the third-place playoff at the same venue.
- Group D features reigning champions Senegal, along with Congo Brazzaville, Sudan, and Nigeria. This group, considered one of the most competitive, will be hosted at the recently renovated Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.
As teams continue to arrive, the buzz across Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Kampala is palpable. Airports, hotels, training venues, and host cities have been transformed with the vibrant energy and branding of CHAN 2024, extending a heartfelt welcome to fans and delegations from all corners of Africa.
