The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has pledged the Army’s support and cooperation to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the implementation of its humanitarian activities.

Gen Kainerugaba made the commitment while hosting an ICRC delegation led by the Head of the ICRC Regional Delegation, Mr Kedir Awol Omar, at the Special Forces Command (SFC) Headquarters.

The delegation briefed the CDF on the organisation’s ongoing humanitarian operations, including efforts to facilitate the return of detainees and prisoners of war to their home countries, restore family links and reunite families separated by war and conflict.

The ICRC also asked the Government of Uganda to consider establishing a National Commission on International Humanitarian Law.

Gen Kainerugaba commended the ICRC for its decades of humanitarian work in Uganda, the region and around the world, particularly its support for post-conflict rehabilitation and direct assistance to victims of conflict.

He noted that the organisation’s work continues to contribute to saving lives and reducing human suffering.

The CDF assured the ICRC delegation of the UPDF’s full commitment to providing the necessary support, access and cooperation to facilitate the smooth implementation of its humanitarian mission.
