KAMPALA, Uganda — Youth activist and media entrepreneur Martin Luther Nyanzi has urged government leaders to widen the fight against corruption by taking accountability campaigns closer to communities, with particular focus on Wakiso District.

Nyanzi said corruption remains a major obstacle to Uganda’s development, affecting service delivery and reducing public confidence in government institutions.

He said many citizens continue to face challenges when trying to engage public offices or access services, warning that any system that creates barriers for ordinary people weakens accountability and trust in leadership.

Nyanzi praised Minister Balaam Barugahara for what he described as a strong stance against corruption and poor service delivery in local governments. He pointed to recent actions by the minister, including inspections and interventions aimed at addressing concerns over ghost workers, misuse of public funds and poor implementation of government projects.

He also commended State Minister Justine Nameere for supporting efforts focused on strengthening accountability at the local government level.

The youth leader called on Balaam to extend the same attention to Wakiso District, especially the Buddo area, where he said government schools and other public institutions need closer supervision to ensure resources reach intended beneficiaries.

“Wakiso also needs attention, especially Buddo where we have government schools. Communities need leaders who can listen to their concerns and ensure that resources meant for citizens are used effectively,” Nyanzi said.

Nyanzi said the responsibility of fighting corruption should not be left to individual leaders but should involve all government officials, lawmakers and citizens.

He also recognised the efforts of public commentators Frank Gashumba and Hon. Abraham Luzzi (Mr. Economy) for promoting conversations around accountability, governance and responsible citizenship.

According to Nyanzi, restoring public confidence in government will require leaders to demonstrate action at the grassroots level and ensure that public resources are protected.

He added that the effectiveness of Uganda’s 12th Parliament should be reflected in stronger oversight, transparency and improved service delivery for citizens across the country.
