The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has reassured the Kabaka’s subjects that all the Kabaka’s land remains intact, addressing widespread misconceptions about land ownership in the kingdom.

Speaking at his official residence, Butikkiro in Mengo, Mayiga clarified that the Kabaka owns only 5% of the registered land in Buganda, while the central government holds the majority.

The Kabaka’s land is managed by the Buganda Land Board, although some parcels are occupied by government entities that have failed to pay leases or rent.

He outlined several key land challenges, including non-performing land offices, delays in investigations by the Land Protection Unit, court delays, population growth, over-utilization of land, and political interference.

Mayiga also highlighted legacy projects, including a new administration system, completion of the Kasubi Tombs and Masengere, and the Emmwanyi Terimba coffee drive.

He acknowledged ongoing challenges such as the Kabaka’s health, opposition from officials he expelled, and resistance to the Ettofaali initiative.

Among unfinished projects are the upgrading of Kabaka’s Lake and development of Mengo Palace.

The remarks come ahead of Mayiga’s 13th anniversary as Katikkiro of Buganda, a position he has held since May 12, 2013.
