Uganda Airlines Leadership Uncertainty Deepens as Girma Wake Emerges in CEO Speculation After Bamuturaki Exit

Kampala, Uganda — Uganda Airlines is facing fresh leadership uncertainty following the exit of Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Bamuturaki, as reports circulate that Ethiopian aviation veteran Girma Wake is being considered among potential candidates to steer the national carrier.

Bamuturaki’s departure comes after months of scrutiny over the airline’s financial performance, operational challenges, and governance concerns.

Government and aviation authorities have been reviewing the airline’s management and procurement practices amid mounting pressure to restructure the struggling state-owned carrier.

In the wake of her exit, the name of Girma Wake — a former CEO of Ethiopian Airlines and one of Africa’s most experienced aviation executives — has surfaced in discussions within industry and political circles.

However, Uganda Airlines has not announced any official replacement, and sources indicate that the CEO position is expected to be openly advertised as part of a broader leadership overhaul.

Wake’s possible involvement has sparked debate within aviation and public policy spaces. Supporters point to his long track record in transforming airlines and building strong regional aviation networks, while critics have raised questions about his advanced age and whether the airline should prioritise younger leadership with long-term strategic vision.

The leadership shake-up comes at a critical time for Uganda Airlines, which continues to face financial pressures, rising operational costs, and increasing competition across regional and international routes.

Analysts say the next CEO will need to focus on improving efficiency, strengthening governance, and restoring confidence among stakeholders and passengers.

Industry observers believe the appointment process will be closely watched, as the decision could shape the future direction of Uganda’s national carrier and determine whether ongoing reforms succeed in stabilising the airline’s operations.

For now, Uganda Airlines remains without a confirmed substantive CEO, and Girma Wake’s name remains part of ongoing speculation rather than an officially announced appointment.
