KAMPALA — Uganda is mourning the death of retired General Moses Ali, one of the country’s most prominent military and political figures, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 87 after a prolonged illness.
Family members confirmed that the veteran statesman died at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, where he had been receiving specialized medical treatment after his condition deteriorated. He had been hospitalized for several days, with growing public concern over his health.
Born on April 5, 1939, in Adjumani District, Moses Ali’s public life spanned more than five decades. He first rose to prominence during the 1970s before later leading the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF) and eventually signing a peace agreement with the National Resistance Movement government, paving the way for the integration of his forces into the national army.
Following the peace agreement, Ali became one of the National Resistance Movement’s most senior leaders, serving in several cabinet positions over the years, including Third Deputy Prime Minister, First Deputy Prime Minister and later Second Deputy Prime Minister. He also served as Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament and represented Adjumani West in Parliament until his death.
Known for his influence in the West Nile sub-region, Ali played a key role in post-conflict recovery efforts and supported government programmes aimed at improving livelihoods, infrastructure and service delivery. His long career made him one of Uganda’s most experienced public servants.
Despite advanced age and health challenges, Ali successfully contested the 2026 General Election and was sworn in as Member of Parliament for Adjumani West, continuing a political career that had earned him respect from both allies and opponents.
Tributes are expected from President Yoweri Museveni, government leaders, opposition politicians and other public figures who worked alongside him during his decades in public service.
The government is expected to announce burial and state funeral arrangements in consultation with the family.
Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali is survived by his children, grandchildren and other relatives.
