Uganda has stepped up preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with an inspection of key railway transport routes, as organisers continue to position infrastructure to handle fan movement during the continental tournament.

The latest assessment focused on whether rail systems can support mass transport when the competition kicks off.

On Monday, February 9, Eng. Arthur Kiwuwa, Vice Chairperson of the AFCON 2027 Infrastructure Management Committee in Uganda, led a delegation to inspect railway infrastructure along the Kampala, Port Bell, Kyengera and Mukono sections.

The exercise aimed to assess Uganda Railways Corporation’s readiness to move large numbers of supporters and identify areas that still require improvement ahead of the finals.

Officials are exploring expanded transport options compared to previous tournaments. Both railway and water transport have been earmarked as part of the mobility plan, reflecting efforts to ease congestion on road networks while improving the fan experience.

Uganda will co host AFCON 2027 under the Pamoja bid alongside Kenya and Tanzania. The East African joint hosting rights, confirmed by CAF in 2023, marked the first time the tournament will be staged across three countries in the CECAFA region.

Preparations across the three nations include stadium upgrades, transport infrastructure development and broader hospitality planning as they target a successful continental showpiece.
