Thomas Tayebwa has pledged to work closely with Parliament leadership, government and opposition lawmakers to strengthen democracy and support Uganda’s development agenda following his renewed mandate as Deputy Speaker of Parliament.

Speaking shortly after being declared Deputy Speaker in the 12th Parliament, Tayebwa thanked Yoweri Museveni, Members of Parliament and Ugandans for once again entrusting him with the responsibility to serve in the new term of office.

“I pledge to work with the Right Honourable Speaker and every member of this House with fairness, humility and commitment so that together we can strengthen Parliament, deepen democracy and advance the aspirations of our people,” Tayebwa said.

The Deputy Speaker described former Speaker Anita Among as both a senior leader and mentor, promising loyalty and support while also offering honest counsel whenever necessary.

“I promise you that you have a deputy who will not only support but also advise you whenever necessary,” he said.

Tayebwa also extended an olive branch to opposition lawmakers, stressing that all MPs share a common mission of improving the lives of Ugandans and fighting poverty regardless of political affiliation.

“To my colleagues in the opposition and all members of this House, all of us have the same mission — to get our people out of poverty,” he noted.

The Deputy Speaker emphasised the importance of cooperation between Parliament and government, particularly in passing appropriation bills and legislation aimed at transforming the country’s economy while maintaining Parliament’s oversight role.

He said lawmakers must balance supporting government programmes with holding public officials accountable to ensure better service delivery.

Tayebwa further pledged to work toward building a Parliament that earns the respect and confidence of Ugandans.

“If you move out and say you are a Member of the 12th Parliament, everyone should be able to say we appreciate the work you are doing,” he said.

He concluded his remarks by calling for unity and national service, saying: “May God bless you all, and may God bless Uganda.”

Tayebwa’s re-election comes as the 12th Parliament begins its term amid heightened political debate over governance, accountability and the balance between cooperation and oversight within the legislative arm of government.
