Joint security agencies have announced strict security and traffic measures ahead of the burial of late Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukiidi IV, scheduled today Saturday, September 12, 2026.
The measures will cover key areas in Fort Portal City, including Karuziika Palace, St John’s Cathedral Church of Uganda and the burial grounds at Amagasani in Karambi.
The Uganda Police Force spokesperson Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusoke Kituuma said the arrangements are intended to protect mourners, dignitaries and residents during the official burial ceremony, which is expected to attract members of the Royal Family, cultural leaders, religious leaders, government officials and visitors from Uganda and abroad.
Kituuma said the security situation in the Rwenzori Region remains calm during the ongoing nine-day mourning period.
He urged the public to cooperate with security officers as large gatherings can create opportunities for crime, including theft, robbery, impersonation and public disorder.
“Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and cooperate fully with the security agencies and the organising committee,” Kituuma said.
Security officers will establish controlled zones and screening points around the palace, cathedral and burial grounds.
Mourners will be required to follow access procedures and avoid carrying prohibited or suspicious items.
The public has also been advised to report suspicious people, unattended items or any unusual activity to security officers.
Medical teams and emergency response points will be available throughout the ceremony.
People with existing medical conditions have been advised to carry their medication and attend with companions where possible.
Security agencies also warned parents and guardians to keep children and vulnerable people under close supervision because of the expected large crowds.
Lost children or missing persons should be reported immediately to police officers or security personnel.
The public has also been advised not to touch or move abandoned items but instead report them to security officers.
Traffic Police will deploy officers along major routes leading to Fort Portal City and areas linked to the burial ceremony.
Motorists have been advised to use designated parking areas and avoid blocking roads, entrances, exits and emergency routes.
Some roads will experience restrictions and temporary diversions depending on the situation on the ground.
At Mpanga Market, motorists may be diverted towards Kamwenge Road when necessary.
Buhinga Stadium will serve as a public parking area, while parking at the palace will remain restricted to authorised vehicles.
The road branching to the Royal Palace will only be accessible to invited guests and authorised vehicles.
Other areas that may face restrictions include Kibogo Road, Maguru Junction, Virika Junction, Kachwamba stretch and Kasusu Junction.
The Kabarole Hospital parking area will also be used for vehicles under the guidance of Traffic Police.
Security agencies reminded media personnel covering the burial to obtain accreditation through the Uganda Media Centre and carry valid identification.
They appealed to mourners, residents, motorists and business operators to remain peaceful and follow instructions from security officers and event organisers.
