President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has fulfilled his commitment to improving local governance by handing over 176 brand new vehicles worth UGX 35.2 billion to Local Government leaders across Uganda.
The handover ceremony, held on Friday, 31st October, 2025, at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, saw 135 District Chairpersons, 10 City Mayors, and 31 Municipal Leaders receive the vehicles.
The initiative aims to enhance supervision and monitoring of key government programmes, including the Road Fund, Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, Regional Development Programme (RDP), Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP), and the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP).
Representing the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, the Minister of Local Government, Hon. Raphael Magyezi, commended the leaders for their dedication and resilience in advancing government initiatives.
He urged them to ensure transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the use of the vehicles, emphasizing that the support was meant to improve service delivery and bring government services closer to the people.
“These vehicles are not for luxury or personal use; they are tools to improve service delivery and bring government services closer to our people,” Hon. Raphael Magyezi said.
The Local Government Minister further directed that the old vehicles previously used by District Chairpersons and Mayors be handed over to the respective Speakers of Districts, Cities, and Municipalities to facilitate council operations and strengthen local legislative functions.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Ben Kumumanya, highlighted the importance of putting the vehicles to proper use.
He called on local leaders to actively supervise development projects, mobilize local revenue, and ensure that government programmes deliver tangible results for communities across the country.
“Our leaders at the local level should actively monitor projects and revenue, ensuring government programmes make a tangible difference in people’s lives,” Kumumanya stated.
By equipping local leaders with these vehicles and reinforcing accountability, the government is strengthening the capacity of local governments to implement development programmes effectively.
This initiative shows a commitment to bringing services closer to the people and ensuring that national development efforts translate into real, tangible benefits for communities across Uganda.
