NUP Forms Probe Committee Over Sexual Harassment

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has formed a special internal committee to investigate serious allegations of sexual harassment and electoral malpractice within its ranks.

The party leadership has vowed to take firm action against any individuals found guilty.

The development follows growing concerns that some senior party members have been involved in questionable activities, particularly during internal party processes.

Among the most notable claims is that Fred Nyanzi, widely known as Chairman Nyanzi and elder brother to party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine), is accused of influencing who receives party endorsement.

This week, former Kawempe South MP Ratiff Ssebaggala publicly accused Nyanzi of controlling party card distribution.

He also named Kawempe Division Mayor Emmanuel Sserunjogi as allegedly collaborating with Nyanzi in irregular practices.

In response to the unfolding crisis, Bobi Wine took a firm stance during a recent address at their offices in Kavule Makerere.

“I don’t support the sexual harassment allegations that have been brought to my attention. As the party leader, I will do everything to stop this from happening if it is really happening.”

Bobi Wine emphasized the party’s zero-tolerance policy towards any form of sexual exploitation or misconduct.

He made it clear that any member found culpable would be disqualified from party activities and subjected to further disciplinary measures.

He further called on potential victims to come forward and provide credible evidence, assuring them of safety and a fair hearing.

“This committee is not here to witch-hunt anyone, but to ensure our party remains a safe, transparent space for all members,” he said.

He also warned that those using false claims to damage reputations or blackmail party officials would face equal consequences:

“Anyone using false claims to blackmail party leaders would also be disqualified.”

In an additional call for transparency, Bobi Wine urged young women within the party to keep records of inappropriate behaviour.

“This committee is not here to witch-hunt anyone, but to ensure our party remains a safe, transparent space for all members,” he added.

The committee will be chaired by Jolly Jackline Tukamushaba, NUP Deputy President for Western Uganda, and  Aisha Kabanda, the party’s Deputy Secretary General.

Their mandate includes investigating both the sexual misconduct allegations and the reported electoral irregularities
