President Yoweri Museveni has endorsed another five-year term for Anita Annet Among as Speaker of Parliament and Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker ahead of the commencement of the 12th Parliament.
The endorsement follows a resolution by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC), which backed the two leaders to continue steering the August House.
Museveni, who also serves as National Chairman of the ruling party, reportedly approved the decision and directed party structures to rally behind the duo.
Sources within the NRM indicated that the decision was guided by the need to maintain stability and continuity in Parliament as the country transitions into a new legislative term.
Among and Tayebwa have led Parliament since 2022, following a change in leadership at the helm of the House.
Political observers say the endorsement significantly strengthens the pair’s bid, given the NRM’s numerical strength in Parliament.
However, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions are elected by Members of Parliament through a secret ballot, meaning formal voting will still take place when the 12th Parliament convenes.
The move comes at a time when internal party consultations are intensifying ahead of the swearing-in of Members of Parliament, scheduled from May 13 to May 15, 2026.
While the NRM’s backing traditionally carries substantial influence in parliamentary elections, analysts note that the outcome will ultimately depend on the dynamics within the House once MPs are sworn in.
