President Yoweri Museveni has approved plans to pursue a single East African visa for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a move aimed at making travel easier for thousands of fans, teams and officials during the tournament that will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. According to a State House statement issued on Thursday, Museveni directed Ugandan officials to begin discussions with their counterparts in Kenya and Tanzania to develop the joint visa arrangement ahead of the continental football showpiece.

Backing the proposal, the President said the idea would simplify movement across the three host nations and enhance the overall tournament experience.

“This is common sense. I support it,” Museveni said, instructing officials to immediately engage Kenya and Tanzania on the proposed visa.

If adopted, the single-entry visa would allow football fans, tourists, participating teams, match officials and other accredited visitors to move freely between Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania for up to four months without applying for separate visas for each country. Demographics

Museveni also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering all the infrastructure required for the tournament on time. He said funding has already been fully allocated for the construction and upgrading of key facilities, including stadiums, roads and hotels, in line with the requirements set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

He assured officials that the government would provide the financial and technical support needed to ensure all AFCON projects are completed within the agreed timelines.

During the meeting, the Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, updated the President on the progress of infrastructure works and assured him that construction of the Busunju–Hoima road remains on schedule and will be completed as planned.
