Residents of Mpererwe, Kiteezi and Kiti are set to benefit from improved road infrastructure as reconstruction of the 9.1-kilometre Mpererwe-Kiteezi-Kiti road gets underway under the Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP).
The road project, valued at UGX 51 billion, is expected to improve mobility and road safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists along the busy corridor.
Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga, together with members of the City Executive Committee and KCCA’s technical team, inspected the ongoing works to assess progress and engage the contractor and consultant.
Balimwezo said the visit was aimed at monitoring the project and addressing challenges that could delay completion.
“They have committed to speeding up the works,” Balimwezo said.
He also urged the contractor to regularly water the road to control dust and minimise the inconvenience to residents, businesses and road users during construction.
According to KCCA Deputy Director for Roads and Drainage, Eng. Maurice Kairania, the completed road will have two traffic lanes, cycling lanes, walkways and 330 street lights.
The project is expected to be completed within 13 months.
The planned walkways and cycling lanes are intended to provide safer spaces for pedestrians and cyclists, while the street lighting is expected to improve visibility and security along the road at night.
Kawempe Division Mayor Emanuel Sserunjoji called for strict adherence to the project specifications, saying the completed road should meet the standards outlined in the Bills of Quantities.
“We want to see everything in the Bills of Quantities fulfilled. We want a quality road,” Sserunjoji said.
He commended residents who voluntarily provided land to facilitate the road reserve, saying their cooperation had contributed to the implementation of the project.
Dr. Shamim Nambase, Executive Secretary for Finance, said KCCA would continue monitoring the project to ensure value for money and quality workmanship.
She also highlighted the importance of proper drainage in protecting the road and extending its lifespan.
Following the road inspection, the KCCA team proceeded to Nsoba drainage channel in Kawempe Division, where rehabilitation works have also commenced under KCRRP.
The 4.7-kilometre Nsoba channel runs from Mulimira through Kalerwe and Bwaise before connecting to the primary Lubigi channel.
The drainage improvements are expected to enhance stormwater flow and help reduce flooding in communities along the route.
KCCA says the road and drainage works are part of broader efforts to improve Kampala’s transport infrastructure while strengthening the city’s capacity to manage stormwater and reduce damage to roads.
