LIRA — April 13, 2026: The High Court in Lira has sentenced Paul Mugerwa, 32, to 40 years in prison for the murder of senior Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist Dr Wilfred Olila.
Mugerwa, a resident of Mbale, was arrested alongside six other suspects in connection with the killing. He pleaded guilty to charges of murder and aggravated robbery and was convicted on March 3, 2026, on his own plea of guilt.
On Monday, April 13, 2026, Mugerwa appeared before Lady Justice Sarah Birungi Kalibbala, who handed him a 40-year sentence for murder and an additional 20 years for aggravated robbery.
While delivering the judgment, Justice Kalibbala stressed the need to deter violent crime, saying, “The taking of human life in such a cruel manner calls for a sentence that reflects the seriousness of the offence.”
She added, “Even though the accused pleaded guilty, this court must ensure justice is served to the victim and his family.”
Police linked the murder to a violent robbery, revealing that the doctor was attacked and killed under brutal circumstances. East Kyoga Regional Police Commander Damalie Nachuha described the condition in which the body was found, stating, “The victim had visible injuries, with signs of restraint and severe assault.”
Lira Resident City Commissioner Lawrence Egole confirmed that security agencies acted swiftly following the incident. “We coordinated with police to ensure suspects were arrested, and we remain committed to ensuring justice is fully served,” he said.
The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) condemned the killing, calling it a tragic loss to the medical profession. “Dr Olila was a committed health worker whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence,” the association noted.
UMA President Dr Herbert Luswata urged continued protection for health workers, saying, “We call upon authorities to strengthen security for medical professionals across the country.”
Defence lawyers had pleaded for leniency, citing Mugerwa’s early plea and remorse. However, the court maintained that the seriousness of the offence warranted a lengthy custodial sentence.
The sentences will run concurrently, with the period Mugerwa spent on remand to be deducted.
The murder of Dr Olila sparked outrage across the Lango sub-region, with many describing his death as a major blow to healthcare services in northern Uganda.
