Katikkiro Mayiga Condemns Abusive Language by NUP Supporters

The Katikkiro of the Buganda Kingdom, Charles Peter Mayiga, has condemned the growing use of abusive language by supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP), warning that such conduct undermines respect, fuels hatred, and causes lasting harm to senior individuals and society.

According to Mayiga, abusive language is a sign of a lack of respect for humanity and can cause hatred in society and permanent damage to the person’s name.

“I see most of you are still young. So when you find a man of 60 years of age and above, he is ahead of you, and he has seen a lot that you haven’t seen. Why don’t you accept learning from him instead of abusing him?,” he questioned.

The Katikkiro acknowledged the perseverance endured through the political time. However, he advised them to learn how to package and speak their opinions keeping in mind the consequences.

He made remarks while speaking to a crowd of NUP party supporters that gathered at Mengo on Monday, December 15th, 2025, ahead of NUP presidential campaigns in Lubaga North and South in the central Buganda region.

“You always hear me encouraging youths on social media to speak with responsibility because one day those words will turn against you when you hold an important office or any position of responsibility when you have aged. If a person makes a mistake, tell them, but don’t abuse them. You can tell a person their mistake without abusing their mother, father, wife, husband, or a child,” Mayiga said.

However, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the Presidential candidate for the NUP, denied the abusive claims, revealing that the claims are being orchestrated by those he works with who want to split his party from the Buganda Kingdom.

“We are good listeners, we love our culture and the nation, but those whom we work with don’t want to see the NUP and Buganda Kingdom together, but we shall continue to keep Buganda on top,” Kyagulanyi said.

Katikkiro’s call for respect has come at a time when different political opponents of the NUP party have raised concerns of abusive posts made by social media accounts that are affiliated with the NUP, especially on the X platform formerly Twitter and other platforms.
