The National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED) party has shaken up its top leadership as it plots its path toward the 2026 general elections.

The shake-up saw several members expelled for defecting to rival formations. Former Secretary General Basajja Charles was replaced by Betty Nyafwono, who now takes charge of the secretariat. Former publicity secretary Moses Matovu was also dropped after crossing to the Democratic Party.

Party leaders say the changes go beyond punishment. They argue the restructuring is part of a wider strategy to tighten discipline, strengthen internal systems, and sharpen NEED’s political vision.

NEED ruled out striking deals with other political parties. Instead, it demanded a national presidential debate, similar to the 2016 showdown, to be held immediately after nominations. According to the party, Ugandans deserve a platform where every presidential aspirant is put to the test.

Amid the reshuffle, the party closed ranks around Joseph Kabuleta, reaffirming him as presidential flag bearer. Officials described him as the face of NEED’s economic empowerment agenda and the figure they believe can challenge the status quo.

The party also launched a nationwide fundraising campaign, urging members and supporters to dig deep and back their candidate. “Every shilling counts,” officials said, calling for grassroots energy to fuel the presidential campaign
