Internationally recognised Danish wildlife journalist and environmental explorer Klaus Thymann has been arrested in Kampala, raising fresh attention around Uganda’s handling of foreign journalists and conservation researchers.

Thymann, whose work has focused extensively on climate change and endangered ecosystems, was reportedly detained while engaging authorities over permits connected to his environmental activities in the Rwenzori Mountains.

Police sources say the award-winning journalist is being held at Kira Road Police Station as investigations continue. Reports further indicate that he may later be transferred to western Uganda, where the alleged offences under investigation are said to have occurred.

Over the years, Thymann has built a global reputation through scientific expeditions, underwater research and documentary reporting highlighting the impact of climate change on disappearing glaciers and vulnerable wildlife habitats.

His projects in the Rwenzori region attracted international scientific and environmental interest.

While authorities have yet to publicly outline the full details of the case, the arrest has already generated concern among press freedom advocates and environmental organisations monitoring Uganda’s relationship with international researchers and journalists.

Observers say the incident could attract wider international attention due to Thymann’s global profile and long-standing conservation work across Africa.

The arrest also comes amid growing debate over civic freedoms in Uganda following recent security operations involving media houses, activists and civil society actors.
