Businessman and outspoken commentator Frank Gashumba has reiterated his belief that Jose Chameleone is the most talented musician in East Africa, maintaining that the Ugandan singer is musically superior to Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz.

Speaking on Radio 4, Gashumba stood by his long-running praise of Chameleone, arguing that his musical talent, extensive catalogue and contribution to the region’s entertainment industry place him ahead of Diamond.
He also claimed that Diamond admires Chameleone, whose influence and longevity have earned him recognition beyond Uganda.
Gashumba has previously made similar comparisons, consistently identifying Chameleone as East Africa’s finest musician while acknowledging that Diamond has achieved greater commercial success.
In his assessment, Chameleone’s biggest setback has been the absence of consistent professional management and discipline capable of maximising his talent.
He argues that Diamond’s success is partly driven by a stronger management structure, which has helped organise his career, develop his brand, secure international partnerships and maintain his commercial momentum.
Diamond, on several occasions, has publicly acknowledged Chameleone’s contribution to East African music, referring to him as a legend and an important figure in the region’s entertainment history.
The Tanzanian star has also demonstrated his admiration through musical tributes, including performing Chameleone’s popular song Valu Valu. He has expressed interest in collaborating with the Ugandan singer, although a joint project has yet to materialise.
The comparison between the two musicians has remained a subject of discussion among East African music fans because of their different career achievements.
Chameleone is celebrated for his decades-long musical journey, songwriting, versatility and influence on Uganda’s music industry. Diamond, on the other hand, has built a formidable international brand through major collaborations, streaming platforms, strategic management and commercial expansion.
Gashumba’s argument is that commercial dominance should not automatically translate into musical superiority.
His latest comments therefore put the spotlight back on a familiar question in East African entertainment: does having a bigger international brand make one a better musician?
