The opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has called on President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to take action against individuals allegedly responsible for altering the Protection of Sovereignty Bill, following his recent disowning of the version currently before Parliament.
President Museveni last week stated that the bill under consideration is not the same as the one originally initiated by Cabinet, raising questions over how the current draft came into being.
Addressing journalists at the FDC headquarters in Najjanankumbi, the party president, Patrick Oboi Amuriat, said the President’s remarks effectively amount to a vote of no confidence in Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka.
Amuriat urged parliamentary committees handling the bill to strictly adhere to procedural requirements to avoid what he termed “avoidable institutional embarrassment.”
He further warned that if the bill is passed in tomorrow’s plenary sitting, the FDC is prepared to challenge it in court.
The Legal, Internal Affairs, and Security committees are currently jointly scrutinizing the proposed legislation, with their report expected to be tabled in Parliament today as debate on the bill intensifies.
