Gender and development specialist Rebecca Kukundakwe has received a national medal in honour of her significant contribution to advancing the rights and empowerment of women and girls in Uganda. The recognition was presented during the International Women’s Day celebrations held yesterday, Sunday March 8th, presided over by Vice President Jessica Alupo, at Kololo Independence Grounds.

With more than 17 years of experience in gender and development work, Dr. Kukundakwe has built a distinguished career focused on promoting gender equality, economic empowerment for women, and inclusive development.

She currently serves as a Gender Specialist on the GROW Project implemented by Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU). In this role, she has been instrumental in supporting women entrepreneurs across the country, helping over 60,000 women strengthen their businesses while tackling challenges such as gender-based violence, restrictive social norms, and limited access to vital business information.

Over the years, Dr. Kukundakwe has collaborated closely with government agencies, development partners, and private sector actors to design and implement programmes that broaden economic opportunities for women and youth. Her work has enabled thousands of young women and men to access decent employment and has also contributed to shaping gender-responsive policies within the private sector.

She has further championed advocacy and community initiatives focused on child protection, women’s land rights, youth participation in governance, and the elimination of harmful practices including female genital mutilation.

Her continued efforts have strengthened institutional responses, increased community awareness, and promoted more inclusive development initiatives across Uganda. The national honour recognises her enduring commitment to creating systems and opportunities that allow women and girls to fully participate in the country’s economic and social progress.
