The corruption investigation into Parliament has entered a new phase, with a case file involving former Speaker Anita Among reportedly submitted to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal review.
The investigation, which was launched about two months ago on the orders of President Yoweri Museveni, has focused on allegations of corruption, money laundering and illicit enrichment involving Parliament and several other government institutions.
Among is said to be one of the key individuals under investigation.
As part of the probe, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), forensic specialists and operatives from Defence Intelligence and Security carried out searches at several properties linked to the former Speaker.
The operations targeted homes in Nakasero, Kigo, Ntinda and Bukedea, where investigators also seized a number of high-end vehicles.
The President reportedly directed that the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) be brought into the final stage of the investigations to help close any remaining evidential gaps before the DPP considered possible criminal charges. That decision is said to have delayed the conclusion of the probe by several weeks.
Last week, investigators from the IGG and CID summoned several Parliament staff members to record final statements at the Inspectorate’s offices.
The first group included Parliament’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Chris Obore, alongside Daniel Adilo, the Director of Human Resource; Leonard Okema, Executive Secretary in the Office of the Speaker; Rajab Kaaya Ssemalulu, Principal Research Officer; Emmanuel Emuron Okwi, Principal Protocol Officer; and other officials.
The officials were later produced before the Anti-Corruption Court and charged with various corruption-related offences. They were subsequently barred from returning to Parliament as investigations continue.
The accused persons are expected to reappear before the Anti-Corruption Court today as the high-profile investigations continue.
