Online activist and photojournalist Andrew Natumanya, popularly known as NinyeTabz on X, has resurfaced after days of uncertainty, following his sudden reappearance at Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala.

Natumanya’s return came after five days during which his whereabouts remained unknown, sparking concern among family members, lawyers, and human rights defenders. Throughout that period, security agencies denied any knowledge of his detention, prompting a widespread search and public outcry.

He was reportedly dropped at CPS by unidentified security operatives in a visibly weak and exhausted condition, bringing an end to the tense silence surrounding his disappearance. His case quickly drew attention, with legal teams and civil liberties advocates gathering at the station to push for his release or immediate court appearance.

Later that same evening, on Monday, June 22, 2026, Natumanya was granted a police bond and released. The development was confirmed by activist Gift Grace Achilla, who had been working with legal representatives to secure his freedom.

Although he has since reunited with his family, his lawyers say they are carefully reviewing the terms of his bond as they prepare for possible legal proceedings. Supporters have described his release as a significant step, following sustained pressure from the public and rights groups.

Natumanya was reportedly abducted on June 17 from Kamwokya by plainclothes operatives, according to eyewitness accounts. He was allegedly forced into an unmarked van and taken to an unknown location, raising further concerns about the use of unlawful detention practices.

Known for his work as a photographer for opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, Natumanya has also built a reputation online for sharing sensitive information on governance and corruption. His posts have often preceded major developments, attracting a large following and increasing scrutiny.

One of his most notable reports involved early revelations about security operations targeting the residences of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among during an anti-corruption investigation. His ability to access such information elevated his profile as a whistleblower.

His disappearance occurred amid a broader crackdown on opposition figures. Around the same time, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago was arrested and charged in connection with treason-related allegations, a move analysts say points to increased pressure on both political leaders and influential online voices.

During the days Natumanya was missing, police maintained they were not holding him. This stance drew criticism from legal bodies and human rights organizations, who warned about a growing pattern of unacknowledged detentions.

Following his release, questions remain about the circumstances of his arrest and detention, with rights advocates calling for accountability and adherence to due process.
