Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has said she remains proud of presiding over the passage of the Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023, and called on African leaders to enact laws that safeguard what she described as African values and cultures.

Among made the remarks on Wednesday, 11 February 2026, while meeting a delegation of parliamentarians from Ghana at Parliament. The delegation was led by Ghana’s Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako.

She said that despite sanctions imposed on her by the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom following the enactment of the law, she stands by her role in its passage.

“The detractors that are out there will not want us to preserve our cultures and our values. For instance, in Uganda, we have tried our best and we will continue to do our best. We passed the Anti-Homosexuality law. I was sanctioned, I am still sanctioned, but I am still alive and proud of what I did,” Among said.

She added that Parliament had taken a firm position in passing the legislation, which she said was aimed at stopping what she termed the promotion and recruitment of LGBTQ individuals, particularly in schools.

Among further stated that although the law attracted criticism and external pressure, it has broad domestic support.

She linked the legislation to what she described as public backing for President Yoweri Museveni, saying many voters supported him because of his stance on cultural values.

The Anti-Homosexuality Act, enacted in 2023, criminalises same-sex relations and prescribes severe penalties. The law has drawn strong international condemnation from rights groups and several Western governments.
