Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) official Frank Mwesigye has offered Shs1 million to the family of late comedian Yokana Mbuuse, popularly known as Kapere Lufotose, while announcing education bursaries for his children.
Mwesigye made the pledges following Kapere’s death on Sunday, November 1, 2026, in Buddo, Wakiso District, and subsequent discussions about the financial difficulties the comedian reportedly faced before his death.
In a statement shared on social media, Mwesigye also questioned the financial contributions made by National Unity Platform (NUP) leaders and supporters during a gathering at the party’s headquarters in Makerere-Kavule on Monday, November 2, where mourners gathered to pay their last respects.
According to figures presented by Mwesigye, the highest individual contribution was Shs20,000 from Mathias Walukaga, followed by Shs5,000 from Nubian Li. Other contributions reportedly ranged between Shs1,000 and Shs15,000.
He claimed that approximately 130 people attended the gathering and contributed a combined Shs234,500. The figures have not been independently verified.
Mwesigye questioned the contributions, arguing that the financial difficulties experienced by a committed supporter raised questions about the support offered to ordinary party members by political leaders.
Kapere’s widow, Lydia Nakandi, had earlier spoken about the family’s struggles, revealing that her husband was worried about Shs320,000 in rent arrears after their landlady threatened eviction.
She also described the difficulties he faced in providing for their children, including struggles to afford basic necessities.
Kapere, who was associated with the Amarula Family comedy group and known for his support of NUP, collapsed during a school visitation at Jolibo Day Care and Junior School in Buddo before he was pronounced dead.
Following the public discussion about his family’s circumstances, Mwesigye announced that he would personally contribute Shs1 million to the widow and invited her to collect the money at a convenient time.
He further revealed that PLU member Mulindwa Ryan Kibedi, who is involved in the education sector and operates several schools along Gayaza Road, had offered bursaries for Kapere’s children.
The arrangement, according to Mwesigye, will cover their education from their current levels until they complete Senior Six.
Mwesigye used the announcement to emphasise that political differences should not prevent Ugandans from supporting one another during difficult moments.
“PLU is for all Ugandans, including those in the opposition. It is the spirit of patriotism, compassion and humanity that brings us together as one people, regardless of our political differences. In times of grief and need, we must remember that we are all Ugandans first,” he said.
His intervention comes as Kapere’s family prepares to lay him to rest, with the comedian’s death prompting tributes from fellow entertainers, political figures and supporters across the country.
