Ugandan lawmakers have paid tribute to the late Gen. Moses Ali, former Second Deputy Prime Minister, honoring his significant contributions to peace, leadership, and national development throughout his extensive career.
Parliamentarians gathered for a special sitting to commemorate the life and legacy of the former Second Deputy Prime Minister and Adjumani West County Representative, Gen. (Rtd.) Moses Ali. He was widely lauded as a statesman, freedom fighter, and key architect of peace in Uganda.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja highlighted Gen. Ali’s critical role in restoring peace in the West Nile region during the 1980s, leading the Uganda National Rescue Front and negotiating a peace deal that integrated his forces into the national army. She also acknowledged his efforts in resolving the LRA insurgency and championing the Amnesty Act, which facilitated the return of many former combatants.
Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi described Gen. Ali as a pivotal figure in Uganda’s modern history, witnessing and shaping the nation through its transitions. Ssenyonyi emphasized Ali’s mentorship to multiple generations of leaders and urged current officials to emulate his commitment to selfless service and accountable governance.
Vice President Jessica Alupo commended Gen. Ali’s dedication to education, particularly his role in the founding of West Nile University and his advocacy for the education of young Muslim girls. UPDF Representative Lt. Gen. James Mugira recounted Ali’s crucial support in stabilizing the West Nile region and dismantling rebel operations during his time as military intelligence chief.
First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga referenced Gen. Ali’s book, ‘The Odyssey of the Nubi,’ and called for the compensation of the Nubian community for properties lost during Uganda’s tumultuous past. Several legislators acknowledged that while they may have had political differences with Gen. Ali, his dedication and contributions to Uganda were undeniable.
Gen. Moses Ali, who passed away on July 18, 2026, served in various capacities, including MP for East Moyo County and ministerial roles in disaster preparedness, internal affairs, and tourism. He is set to be laid to rest in Adjumani District.
