President Yoweri Museveni has paid tribute to the late General (Rtd) Moses Ali, recognizing him as a pivotal figure in Uganda’s struggle for freedom and a key architect of peace, particularly in the West Nile region.
President Yoweri Museveni has lauded the late General (Rtd) Moses Ali, characterizing him as a true patriot, freedom fighter, and peacemaker whose indelible mark on Uganda’s stability and the West Nile sub-region’s development is etched in the nation’s history.
During a special parliamentary sitting convened to honor the veteran legislator, President Museveni highlighted three core qualities that defined Moses Ali’s extensive public service: a commitment to freedom, a dedication to peace, and a focus on development.
Museveni recounted that even during his service under former President Idi Amin, Moses Ali harbored reservations about the regime’s brutality and human rights abuses, ultimately leading to his quiet opposition. This stance, the President noted, demonstrated Ali’s prioritization of justice and human dignity over political office.
President Museveni also shared his personal acquaintance with General Ali, which began in Libya in 1981. He described Moses Ali as a leader who favored cooperation over conflict, a trait that proved crucial during the final stages of the liberation struggle in 1985-1986. Moses Ali, leading the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF), opted to withdraw his forces rather than engage the advancing National Resistance Army (NRA) into Kampala, thereby averting further bloodshed.
Post-conflict, General Ali remained a staunch advocate for the West Nile region. He persistently championed infrastructure development, improved living conditions, and economic opportunities for its people, actively pushing the government for investments in roads, electricity, and veteran compensation.
General Moses Ali served Uganda diligently for nearly six decades across both military and civilian capacities. He held numerous ministerial positions, including First Deputy Prime Minister, and represented Adjumani West County as a Member of Parliament, where he was respected for his experience and unwavering advocacy for peace and progress in his home region.
