KAMPALA — ICT and National Guidance Minister Justine Kasule Lumumba has said the government is yet to conclude its inquiry into the closure of Nation Media Group (NMG) operations in Uganda, despite the completion of the company’s ownership transition.
Speaking on Tuesday, the minister said the investigation remains active and that the government will announce its position once the process is complete.
“We are still inquiring, and after the inquiry, we will reply,” Lumumba said.
Her comments come as uncertainty continues over the reopening of NMG’s Ugandan media outlets, including the Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM and Dembe FM, which have remained closed since security agencies suspended their operations.
The closure has disrupted news production and broadcasting while leaving more than 700 employees without work.
Although the transfer of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development’s stake in Nation Media Group to new investors has been concluded, the government has indicated that its inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the closure is continuing.
Officials have not disclosed the scope of the ongoing investigation or provided a timeline for when it will be completed.
The Uganda Communications Commission has previously said it will review the findings of the inquiry before determining whether any further regulatory action is necessary.
For now, the fate of the affected media outlets remains uncertain as journalists, employees and the public await the government’s final decision.
