Once a quiet agricultural area, Kapeeka Industrial Park in Nakaseke District has become a bustling hub for manufacturing, driving economic growth, job creation, and technological advancement in Uganda.

The park’s integrated infrastructure and diverse industries are reshaping the local economy and contributing significantly to the nation’s industrialisation strategy.

Northwest of Kampala, in the historically significant Nakaseke District, lies the China-Uganda Liao Shen Industrial Park, commonly known as Kapeeka Industrial Park.

What was once a landscape of maize fields has been transformed into a dynamic 5.2-square-kilometer manufacturing center, buzzing with activity and equipped with modern industrial infrastructure.

Since its official opening in 2015, Kapeeka Industrial Park has operated as a self-sufficient industrial zone. It boasts essential utilities like an on-site 100MW power substation, a robust drainage system, and a high-capacity water supply, all designed to reduce operational costs for businesses.

The park hosts a wide array of manufacturing facilities. Goodwill Uganda Ceramic Co. Ltd. is a major player, producing an impressive 30,000 to 40,000 square meters of tiles daily.

The company employs over 1,150 Ugandans and sources more than 90% of its raw materials locally. Venus Industries Uganda assembles household electronics and lighting products, distributing them both domestically and for export.

Gocta Workwear Uganda Limited specializes in industrial protective gear, exporting its products to several European countries. Hai Hui International Group manufactures bathroom fixtures and tableware, while Yale International Investment supports the agricultural sector by processing grains. These diverse operations showcase Uganda’s growing manufacturing capabilities.

The impact on the local community has been profound. Approximately 36,000 workers commute to the park daily, bringing economic vitality to an area previously characterized by high youth unemployment and subsistence farming.

This influx has led to a real estate boom, with land values increasing dramatically and rental income providing steady livelihoods for residents.

The economic uplift has also spurred growth in the hospitality sector, with numerous local eateries serving the workforce. Infrastructure, including transportation networks, has seen significant upgrades, improving connectivity and facilitating trade.

Kapeeka Industrial Park is central to Uganda’s strategy of shifting from raw material exports to import substitution and promoting finished goods exports, thereby improving the nation’s trade balance. Crucially, the park is fostering technology transfer, with local youth progressing from unskilled laborers to certified technicians and managers, embedding vital expertise within the Ugandan workforce.

This transformation is a testament to how strategic industrial development can revitalize rural areas and significantly contribute to national economic goals.

The successful integration of local labor and resources underscores Kapeeka’s role in Uganda’s industrial future.
