14 people have been confirmed dead and 28 injured after a bus collided head-on with a trailer at Bobi Trading Centre along the Kampala–Gulu Highway.
The accident happened on Tuesday at around 9:34 pm. The crash involved motor vehicle UBE 110H, an Isuzu bus belonging to OPIT Travellers Company, and motor vehicle KBS 564D/ZE 7948, a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer.
Preliminary reports indicate that the bus driver, who was allegedly speeding, attempted to avoid a pedestrian crossing the road, lost control of the vehicle and collided head-on with the oncoming trailer.
Fourteen people died on the spot, while 28 others sustained injuries. The injured victims were rushed to various medical facilities for treatment.
Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura said investigations are underway. He, however, urged motorists to avoid overspeeding.
“We urge all motorists to strictly observe speed limits, especially during the night when visibility is reduced. Drivers are also reminded to remain vigilant, anticipate pedestrian movement in trading centres and always drive at speeds that allow them to stop safely,” he said.
