Police in Iganga District, working with the UPDF Defence Intelligence Security team, have arrested six suspects alleged to be part of a criminal gang impersonating President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and his daughter, Natasha Karugire, to defraud members of the public.
The arrests, carried out on Wednesday, July 2, 2026, at around 12:00 PM in Nandekula A village, Bulubandi parish, Nakigo Sub County, targeted individuals who allegedly used fake accounts to solicit money from unsuspecting citizens across various districts.
The suspects are: Mugudya Mustafa, 17, Maganda Murishidi, 18, Waiswa Muhammad, 21, Kaima Jamiru, 17, Mulawa Shafick, 17, and Ngobi Sabath, 15.
All are residents of the same village in Iganga District.
Nine mobile phones believed to have been used in the fraudulent activities were recovered during the intelligence-led operation.
Investigations revealed that the phones contained multiple fake accounts, including a counterfeit “youth development application fund” purportedly run by “Natasha K. Museveni.”
The suspects have reportedly admitted to using these platforms to deceive victims into sending money under false pretences.
This latest arrest comes amid a pattern of similar fraud cases in the Iganga area.
In February 2026, police arrested four other suspects for creating fake TikTok and WhatsApp accounts impersonating Natasha Museveni Karugire to defraud people seeking financial assistance.
Earlier incidents in May also involved individuals posing as the First Daughter and prominent businessman Hamis Kiggundu.
Authorities have warned the public to remain vigilant against such scams, urging citizens to verify any requests for money or personal details purportedly from high-profile figures through official channels only.
The six suspects have been transferred to Jinja Road Police Station for further management and are expected to face charges of impersonation and fraud.
Police spokesperson and security officials have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on cyber-enabled fraud, especially those exploiting the names of prominent public figures.
Investigations continue to establish the full extent of the gang’s activities and identify possible accomplices. Members of the public with information are encouraged to contact the nearest police station.
