Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been charged with misprision of treason before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Makindye.

Lukwago, who was arrested several days ago, was brought to court on Wednesday afternoon under tight security as prosecutors read out the charge.

Lukwago is serving as lead defence lawyer for opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye in an ongoing treason case.

By press time, proceedings at the Makindye court were still underway, with Lukwago’s legal team expected to respond to the allegation and make submissions on his bail application.
