PLU SOLIDIFIES POSITION BEHIND TAYEBWA FOR DEPUTY SPEAKER POST

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has solidified its backing for Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa to retain his position in the 12th Parliament, following a renewed directive attributed to PLU Chairman Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

The latest endorsement comes as Parliament prepares for leadership elections set for May 25, 2026, where Members of Parliament will elect both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

Gen Muhoozi is reported to have emphasized that the decision aligns with guidance from President Yoweri Museveni, and that PLU-aligned legislators are expected to vote as a bloc in support of Tayebwa.

The move is seen as part of ongoing political consolidation within ruling-aligned structures, as competing interests negotiate influence in the composition of the 12th Parliament’s leadership.

Earlier shifts in PLU’s position had sparked uncertainty over its preferred candidates for top parliamentary offices, but the latest directive appears to have clarified its stance on the Deputy Speakership race.

Political observers note that such endorsements could play a decisive role in shaping the outcome of the leadership vote, given the influence of bloc voting within ruling party structures.

The 12th Parliament is expected to commence its first sitting shortly after the swearing-in of newly elected MPs, with leadership elections forming one of its earliest and most significant agenda items.
