Busiro East Member of Parliament, Medard Lubega Ssegona, has declared his intention to succeed Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine, as the next president of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Speaking at a public event in his constituency, Ssegona expressed readiness to assume the party’s top leadership position once Kyagulanyi completes his agreed-upon two terms as party president.

“When Kyagulanyi’s two terms, which we mutually agreed upon, come to an end, the next president will be from Busiro—and that will be me,” Ssegona stated confidently.

Bobi Wine took over leadership of the party in 2020 after negotiations with the original National Unity, Reconciliation and Development Party (NURP), founded by John Bosco Kibalama. In 2023, NUP formally introduced a two-term limit for all party leaders and flag bearers.

Ssegona’s political journey within NUP has not been without controversy. He is widely seen as an ally of Mathias Mpuuga, the former Leader of the Opposition who was ousted from his party leadership role following corruption allegations.

Ssegona was among the MPs who defended Mpuuga during the fallout. Both politicians joined NUP in 2020 after leaving the Democratic Party (DP) Bloc.

Recently, Mpuuga launched a new political party, the Democratic Front. While speculation is mounting about where Ssegona’s loyalties lie, he has remained noncommittal. It is still unclear whether he will seek re-election under the NUP or the Democratic Front banner in the 2026 general elections.
