Government set to brief Parliament on Fuel Price Surge, Scarcity Fears

Government is expected to brief Parliament next week on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, regarding growing concerns over alleged fuel scarcity and sharp price distortions across the country.

The matter was raised by Kikinzi West MP, James Kabee-Ruka, who questioned the steady rise in fuel prices despite repeated government assurances of sufficient national supply.

He challenged authorities to explain the root cause of the apparent inconsistency.

Responding to the concerns, State Minister for Trade, David Bahati, said government interventions have helped keep Uganda’s fuel prices relatively stable compared to neighboring countries.

He added that the Minister of Energy, Ruth Nankabirwa, will deliver a comprehensive statement during the next parliamentary sitting.

Several legislators voiced alarm over the escalating costs, noting that pump prices are nearing 9,000 shillings per litre and, in some areas, fluctuate between day and night.

Speaker Anita Among also raised concerns about regional price disparities, suggesting the possibility of fuel hoarding.

Other MPs, including Dicksons Kateshumbwa, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, and Solomon Silwany, warned that the situation could signal an emerging fuel shortage and called for swift government action.

Bahati assured Parliament that investigations into the price irregularities are ongoing, with a detailed update expected in Tuesday’s session.
