KAMPALA: Elias Nalukoola has sparked debate after questioning why Ugandans should seek the intervention of religious leaders in securing the release of alleged political prisoners instead of directly engaging the country’s top leadership.
In a strongly worded statement, Nalukoola argued that the authority to release detainees lies within the executive arm of government. “Why should we turn to religious leaders to plead for the release of political prisoners when the president is available?” he asked.
His remarks come amid renewed calls from sections of the public urging faith leaders to mediate in politically sensitive detentions.
Nalukoola maintained that while religious institutions play an important moral role in society, decisions concerning arrests and detentions fall under state authority led by President Yoweri Museveni.
Political observers say the comments highlight ongoing tensions between opposition figures and the government over how cases involving opposition supporters are handled.
There has been no formal government response to the statement. However, the issue continues to generate discussion on governance and accountability in Uganda’s political landscape.
