Kalungu, Uganda: Tragedy struck a local school in Kalungu District when a Primary Four pupil reportedly died inside a dormitory at an unregistered boarding school on Tuesday.

The nine-year-old girl, identified as Vanessa Nakayemba, was attending Royal Ark Nursery and Primary School in Lukaya Town Council.

School authorities say she fell ill and was rushed for medical attention, but she later passed away.

Local police have launched an investigation into the incident. Early findings revealed that the school’s dormitory was overcrowded and lacked proper hygiene facilities. A school matron has been taken in for questioning to assist with inquiries.

Vanessa’s father and family expressed shock and demanded a thorough investigation to determine the cause of death.

Education officials have warned parents to verify the registration status of schools before enrollment, highlighting the risks associated with unlicensed institutions.

Counseling services are being organized for fellow pupils who witnessed the tragedy, while authorities continue to assess the overall safety of the school.

The case has reignited national concerns about the regulation of private boarding schools and child safety in Uganda.
