GULU CITY: Tension gripped parts of Gulu City in the early hours of Sunday morning after violent clashes between suspected street gang members and chapati vendors left one person dead and several others injured.
The incident occurred at around 4:30am along Cemetery Road in Pece-Laroo Division when a group of youths, reportedly members of a notorious street gang locally known as “Aguu,” confronted chapati sellers during a dispute over payment.
According to Aswa West Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong, the disagreement escalated into a physical altercation after the youths allegedly attempted to pay less than the required amount for food.
“In the process of the scuffle, one of the gang members was stabbed and later succumbed to injuries,” Ongom confirmed.
The stabbing reportedly triggered retaliation from other gang members, who went on to attack vendors, vandalise kiosks, and rob nearby businesses.
Eyewitnesses say several makeshift stalls were destroyed, and property was looted during the chaos.
Police and the Fire Brigade responded to the scene to restore order and contain the situation.
Two injured individuals were rushed to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention.
Authorities have since arrested a 19-year-old suspect to assist with investigations, while a manhunt for other individuals involved is ongoing.
A case of murder has been registered at Gulu Central Police Station.
Local leaders have condemned the violence, calling for tighter security measures to address rising gang activity in the city.
Investigations are continuing.
