FDC’s Nsibambi Questions Competence of Newly Elected Opposition MPs in Buganda

Outgoing Mawokota South MP, Yusuf Nsibambi, has raised serious concerns about the competence of many newly elected opposition MPs in Buganda, describing their election as “very alarming and worrying.”

“When you look at most of the opposition MPs elected, especially in Buganda, they are not even fit to be councillors. That is very alarming and worrying,” Nsibambi said, highlighting what he sees as a lack of experience and capacity among the new legislators.

Nsibambi, who lost his Mawokota South seat to NRM’s Ms Suzan Nakawuki in the January 15, 2026 elections, argued that voters in the region may have done themselves a disservice by voting out seasoned opposition MPs.

He lamented the loss of long-serving legislators such as Kira Municipality’s Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, Busiro East’s Medard Ssegona, Nyendo-Mukungwe’s Mathias Mpuuga, and Bugiri Municipality’s Abdu Katuntu.

“There’s no reason why we should have contestants standing against experienced MPs. We have lost all the experienced members,” Nsibambi said, stressing that the absence of veteran lawmakers could affect parliamentary effectiveness.

A former law lecturer at Makerere University, Nsibambi questioned whether the new MPs have the skills to navigate complex parliamentary work.

“Understanding a parliamentary report alone is a serious task. Most opposition MPs elected are not even fit to be councillors. Their constituents think they can, but they can’t,” he added.

Following his defeat, Nsibambi announced his retirement from elective politics, citing a lack of appreciation from voters for his years of service in Mawokota South.
