The Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, on Thursday conducted a comprehensive inspection of the newly completed Hoima City Stadium—one of Uganda’s flagship sports infrastructure projects and a key venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The ultramodern facility, completed five months ahead of schedule after an eighteen-month construction period, is expected to be officially commissioned by President Museveni in the coming days.

Gen. Muhoozi was taken through the stadium’s advanced features by Project Manager Murat Altun, who highlighted installations such as a semi-Olympic swimming pool, fully furnished VIP suites, modern changing rooms, an external training pitch, and a 2,000-seat indoor arena equipped with a basketball court.

Senior officials who accompanied the inspection included the Chairman of SUUMA, Selim Bora; CEO Envar Sayan; Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang; the Chairman of the National Council of Sports; and the Mayor of Hoima City.

In his remarks, Gen. Muhoozi stressed the importance of maintaining the stadium’s high-quality standards. He urged Minister Ogwang and the National Council of Sports to use Hoima City Stadium as the benchmark for future sports infrastructure developments across the country.

The 20,000-seat multi-purpose stadium is among Uganda’s designated venues for the AFCON 2027 tournament, set to be co-hosted with Kenya and Tanzania.

Its timely completion marks a major milestone in Uganda’s preparations to host Africa’s premier football event and is one of three national stadiums planned for tournament fixtures.

Gen. Muhoozi reaffirmed his commitment to the growth of sports in Uganda, noting that world-class facilities are essential for talent development and international competitiveness.

“Providing and maintaining top-tier sports facilities is fundamental to developing Uganda’s athletes and ensuring success on the global stage,” he said.

The Hoima City Stadium represents a significant government investment aimed at expanding regional sports infrastructure, boosting the Hoima economic hub, and ensuring Uganda meets all its obligations as an AFCON 2027 co-host.
