The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has a new Women’s League Chairperson. Dr. Tanga Odoi, chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, on Monday declared Adrine Kobusingye the winner of the highly contested race, securing a commanding 1,839 votes.

Kobusingye’s victory marks a significant shift in the party’s women leadership, unseating long-serving Lydia Wanyoto, who withdrew from the contest shortly before voting.

The outcome signals a generational and strategic change in how the NRM organizes its women’s wing ahead of the 2026 elections.

Her closest challenger, Faridah Kimbowa, polled 670 votes after receiving backing from Wanyoto and fellow candidate Kaliisa Kyomukama, who stepped down and rallied her delegates behind Kimbowa.

Despite this consolidation, Kobusingye’s wide margin proved insurmountable.

Final Tally: Adrine Kobusingye – 1,839 votes, Faridah Kimbowa – 670 votes, Sarah Ochieng – 19 votes, Faridah Nakalawo – 3 votes, Rehema Kyanika – 2 votes, Lydia Wanyoto – withdrew

The outcome cements Kobusingye as the new face of the NRM Women’s League, a position critical for mobilizing female voters and strengthening grassroots structures nationwide.

Her victory also raises questions about the future political trajectory of Lydia Wanyoto, a veteran NRM mobilizer who has long been a formidable figure in the party’s women’s politics.
