Not even a heavy evening downpour could dampen the spirit of celebration as thousands of music lovers, young and old, turned up to witness Uganda’s oldest and most iconic band, Afrigo, mark its golden jubilee in grand style.

Organized by Talent Africa Group, the concert was a true testament to music, love, and loyalty, drawing an overwhelming crowd determined to honor five decades of Afrigo’s unmatched legacy. Despite the rain, the event went on seamlessly, living up to the promise of an unforgettable night.

One of the biggest highlights was the electrifying performance by Congolese legend Koffi Olomide, who had the crowd in a frenzy with his signature Ndombolo moves and timeless hits.

Speaking at the event, Aly Alibhai, CEO of Talent Africa Group, said: “From day one, I knew Afrigo at 50 was never going to be just a concert, but a historic celebration of resilience, culture, and timeless music.”

UBL’s Premium Beers Brand Manager, Denise Paula Nazzinda, praised the event, reaffirming the brewery’s commitment to celebrating art and delivering elevated music experiences. As official beer partner, Tusker Malt Lager took pride in supporting Afrigo’s milestone, hailing the band’s craftsmanship and promising more memorable live music moments.

How the Night Unfolded

On a cold, rain-soaked evening, Douglas Lwanga of Next Media wasted no time firing up the excited crowd as the official host.

By 8:10 p.m., Abeka Band had kicked off with the Buganda Kingdom anthem, captivating royal loyalists before taking the audience down memory lane with Ugandan classics from legends such as Mesach Semakula, Sweet Kid, Henry Tigan, King Michael, Chance Nalubega, and Betty Mpologoma.

At 9:00 p.m., the much-awaited Afrigo Band made a majestic entrance in black-and-gold attire. Veterans Moses Matovu, Rachel Magoola, and Joanita Kawalya led the band through a flawless performance of classics including Batuse, Jim, Emaali, Olumbe Lw’Obwavu, and Obangaina, with fans singing and dancing along.

Discounted beverages from Flexipay and UBL added to the vibrant mood as revelers enjoyed every beat.

Later in the night, Koffi Olomide stormed the stage with his hit Papa Mobimba, also featured in his collaboration Waa with Diamond Platnumz. He thrilled the crowd further with fan favorites like Senga, Effrakata, and Ekotite. The audience danced wildly, proving the true power of African rhythm.

As the clock neared midnight, the skies lit up with a dazzling five-minute fireworks display, followed by the unveiling of the Afrigo@50 Commemorative Book, which every reveler had a chance to receive.

The ceremony was graced by Prince David Wassajja, representing the Kabaka of Buganda, alongside Hon. Nyombi Thembo, Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission.

Delivering the Kabaka’s message, Prince Wassajja said: “The King would have loved to be here today, but due to unavoidable circumstances, he delegated me to convey his message. He asked me to tell you that he is extremely proud of Afrigo and the enormous contribution you have made to the art and music of our motherland.”
