The police in Mbale city, Eastern Uganda, are investigating the death of a 16-year-old student of Mbale High School who was found dead at her home in Industrial Division.

The deceased, identified as Catherine Nelima, was a senior three student and a resident of Bukisukye Lower Cell in Bumutoto Ward. According to police, the incident is believed to have occurred on Tuesday, June 9, although the exact time remains unknown.

Preliminary findings indicate that Nelima’s mother, Jennifer Kanyunyuzi, 39, a businesswoman, left home for work, leaving her daughter and other children at the residence.

Police say that when Kanyunyuzi returned home at about 5pm, she found that the other children had gone to neighbouring homes. Upon checking her bedroom, she reportedly discovered Nelima unresponsive.

Officers from the homicide unit and scene of crime personnel attached to Mbale Central Police Station responded to the scene and conducted examinations.

The body was later taken to Mbale City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Elgon regional police spokesperson Rogers Taitika confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing.

“We urge members of the public, especially parents, guardians and schools, to remain vigilant about the mental health and well-being of children. Anyone with information that may assist investigations should report to Mbale Central Police Station,” Taitika said.
