Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops deployed under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), working jointly with the Somalia National Army (SNA), have taken control of Mubarak town following a coordinated assault on an Al-Shabaab stronghold.

The operation, dubbed “Rolling Thunder,” commenced on February 28, 2026, under the leadership of Sector One Commander Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja. It was designed to secure critical supply corridors, weaken Al-Shabaab operations, and re-establish stability in the area.

Mubarak had reportedly been used by the militants to disrupt logistics routes and threaten civilian populations, making it a key objective for the allied forces.

Battle Group 44 Commander and overall Operation Commander, Colonel Akena, applauded the troops for their gallantry and professionalism. He noted that the successful seizure of the town is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle Al-Shabaab networks and reinforce peace and security in the region.

“We have effectively secured the town and its surrounding areas,” Col Akena stated, commending both UPDF and SNA forces for their discipline and resilience.

He described the fall of Mubarak as a major achievement that bolsters wider stabilization efforts aimed at restoring normalcy, supporting the safe return of displaced residents, and enabling local administrative structures to function efficiently.

Col Akena further revealed that several Al-Shabaab combatants were neutralized, others apprehended, weapons and ammunition were seized, and improvised explosive device (IED) production sites were dismantled during the mission.

The UPDF reaffirmed its dedication to supporting peace enforcement and stabilization operations in Somalia, pledging continued collaboration with the SNA and Somali authorities to advance sustainable peace and development.
